Everything you see in the mirror is protein, every cell contains protein. Protein is broken down into amino acids within the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of your muscles and body.
Protein is needed in your body to ‘build stuff’, that’s how I remember why it’s so important. It is responsible for growth, repair and maintenance of cells. When you do weight training you cause miniscule tears to your muscle fibres, protein is then used to help repair and rebuild those fibres stronger which leads to more muscle definition.
Your body needs to use a lot more energy to break down protein. You can actually get leaner by increasing protein in your diet. The more you exercise the more increased need for protein.
Natural sources of protein include eggs, meat, fish, milk, tofu, cheese, youghurt. Other sources are protein powder, which is great after training. Being liquid it goes straight where it’s needed to repair and build muscle tissue.
Protein rich foods can be more satisfying than other foods because the protein keeps you full and more satisfied for longer.
Therefore it is important to ensure you include protein in your diet, along with a balanced diet including plenty of fresh vegies, some fruits and good fats. Balance is the key.
