It’s a new year and many of us have been on holidays or let your hair down and indulged over the festive season.
Some of you have been procrastinating for some time about working on your health and fitness or you may be struggling with the motivation to get back into it after time off.
Thinking about embarking on a new health and fitness journey can be tough, but remember it’s just a decision.
Overcoming your fears
Identify what’s holding you back from starting. Is it the…
- Fear of change?
- Fear of something new?
- Fear it’s going to be too hard?
- Fear of embarrassment in front of other people?
- Fear of time and taking on too much?
- Fear of what others will think?
Look at those fears and ask yourself ‘what’s really the worst thing that can happen?’
You’ve got nothing to lose from giving things a go. Remember everyone has had to start somewhere and probably had the same fears as you, but they did it anyway and overcame them.
I often remind myself of this quote:
“Do the thing you fear and death of the fear is certain”
It’s true. You will find you’ll look back and think ‘what was I even worried about?’
Why is it important for you?
To get results you need to identify your why. You’re not going to start something unless you see value in it for yourself.
Your reason why can come from one of two perspectives:
- A goal you’re working towards or a deep desire you have OR
- A nightmare you’ve absolutely had enough of and don’t want to be living like anymore
Why do you really want change? How would it make you feel?
Forget about saying ‘I just want to be toned’. Unfortunately that’s not enough to make it happen. Dig deeper!!!
What would change really mean to:
- Your confidence
- Your happiness
- Your relationship
- Your career
- Your energy levels and keeping up with life and your family
- Your mental strength/health
- Your family and the example you set for your children
People make time for things they value.
When you are clear on your values and your reason why, you can achieve anything you want!!!
(Next week I’ll cover more on helping you identify your values)
Tips to make it happen
It’s just a decision!!!
Everything starts with a simple decision.
- Once you decide to start and commit everything will fall into place one step at a time.
- Just make an enquiry into your chosen activity. You will find once you put it out there people are genuinely happy to help you and make you feel at ease.
- Don’t over complicate it. Don’t overthink all the details. Stop procrastinating. Just do it! Take action!
- Accountability. Start in a group, with a friend, tell your family what you want to achieve. A trainer or coach can also help.
- Don’t give up after your first attempt. You may find it challenging but that’s ok. Keep going. It doesn’t get easier, but you get stronger. Give yourself the opportunity to see that.
I promise you once you start you won’t regret it. You’ll get stronger every week both physically, emotionally and mentally.
The most common thing I hear is ‘I wish I did this sooner’.
Remember it’s your health, your fitness, your body, your life and only YOU can DECIDE to make a change.
So what are you waiting for?
