Develop a solution mindset

I love this pic below. It represents the ideas we have in our heads and reality.

Do you find you have a goal you want to work towards and delay starting. Perhaps you start but due to circumstances you stop or go back to your old habits?

There is always going to be something. ‘Life’ is always going to get in the way. But that’s just it, that’s life. It’s a journey and consists of ups and downs. Something is always going to get thrown at you, it’s how you handle it and what you do about it that counts.

There’s a lot to be said about our perception. Do you see things as a problem or do you look at things with a solution mindset and think how can I solve or fix it to make it work for me? Focus on the solution and the problem seems to disappear.

I remember my mum saying to me when we were thinking about having a baby ‘don’t put it off until the timing is perfect or you have enough money because you’ll put it off forever, just do it when you’re ready and it will all work out’. She was right and the same principle applies to many things including your health, fitness or weight loss journey.

You need to adopt a ‘solution’ mindset to help get you through. I try and teach this to my kids so they won’t give up on things as adults. They’ll tell me a problem, an excuse or some reason why it can’t be done. I say to them (it’s sounds a bit harsh I know lol) ‘so you’ll just have to figure it out then’. I will help but they need to come up with a way to make it happen and try their best and so do we.

I often see people progressing well and then all of a sudden come undone and let their emotions or problem get the better of them. Sometimes once a problem or setback occurs people will tell themselves that ‘it’s ok, and they’ll blame or use it as an excuse for their coming undone, then use that as a reason to quit or put it off. Once that happens it’s even harder to get started again. We need to take responsibility for our actions and learn to adopt an attitude of ‘it’s ok’. Let our self talk be ‘a setback has happened and that’s fine, l just need to accept it and keep going’.

The timing is never going to be perfect and even when you think it is, a distraction or problem may arise. Are you going to let it defeat you and quit or are you going to figure out a way around it and continue on your journey? Setbacks happen and that’s ok. The key is making sure you learn from it and continue. Have a look at the setback and ask yourself:

How can I get around it?
What can I change or do differently?
What do I need to prioritise?
What would my life look like if I couldn’t use this as an excuse?
Challenges make you stronger. They teach a lesson. When you focus on a solution you rid yourself of the excuse then things will fall into place for you. You get what you focus on. Sometimes a setback can feel overwhelming and out of your control. What you can do is to think in small bite size pieces and focus on what you can accomplish in the here and now. If you want something bad enough and your goals are more important than your excuses, you’ll figure it out and make it work.
Your dream, goal, reason has to be bigger than your fear or problem.

Perfection in my opinion is a myth. We’re not here to be perfect and life is not always going to be perfect. We’re here to learn, grow, experience and become stronger. When you look at things that way it sometimes helps makes life a little easier and takes the pressure off always having to get everything just right.

Keep going and do your best. I believe in you. You need to believe in yourself and trust that you will overcome any hurdle and reach your goal. It all comes down to your mindset.
